Breathe
As a man in his last breath drops all he is carrying, each breath becomes a little death that can set us free. – From The Book of Awakening
“Each breath sets us free.”
Each breath represents the beginning of a new moment or the end of the last.
Feel the air rushing through your nose, the temperature you perceive, the expansion of your lungs—it's all part of life's next step.
Recognize that breath is our life force. It adds vitality to our bodies, allowing the rest of our systems to perform their roles.
When we breathe deeply, our regulation resets, and the polyvagal nerve calms down. It’s simple yet incredibly complex.
We take a big, deep breath as we contemplate something new or calm a fear. Breath can accomplish both.
If you observe horses closely, you'll see the same pattern: fast breathing indicates anxiety, while slow breathing signifies relaxation. A sharp, big breath out reflects uncertainty, whereas a slow, deep exhale releases tension.
Breath provides us with what we need. I’ve read that taking three big, deep breaths can help you access your “thinking” brain during stressful times. It grants the body a pause, a moment of respite. This is the Power of the Pause. So much can change when you allow this to occur.
When you watch a client stop pursuing an outcome, pause, and breathe, everything shifts afterward. A horse that was walking away may stop and look back, sensing the change in the person's energy. Perhaps they feel safer than before, fostering curiosity while expressing compassion and empathy.
I truly appreciate the power of the pause.
Take a breath, feel its sensation, and create a new moment through the power of this pause.
